MAKING THE RIGHT MOVE

If you are a small or medium sized company and are considering purchasing 3D modelling software because the nature of your business demands it, there is a wide selection of products on the market. Unless you are already an expert in the field (and the chances are you’re not), you’ll probably consult with someone who will be able to advise on the package that would best suit your needs. Then your employees that are going to have to use the product, will have to have some form of training, be it at the offices/training school of the software manufacturer or in-house at their place of work.

If you think that 3D modelling is the career for you, then here are a variety of options open to you. But first you must decide on the path you wish to follow. As described above, 3D modelling techniques are used in a wide variety of applications from designing a new house, developing the next generation of aeroplane through to the making of Shrek 21 (see Animation).

Once you’ve decided this, the learning aspect involved takes many turns. Here are just two:-

• If you decide to go-it-alone and use 3D modelling for some simple projects, then there are many ‘off-the-shelf’ packages on the market that may do exactly what you require; and by purchasing the software together with a bunch of manuals, you can teach yourself.

• If you wish to join the likes of Dreamworks (again see Animation), then you’ll need extensive training in order to be able to use the software that they use. 3-D modelling courses are available but we’re not talking home-study here!!
